Lean 4

Math 2.0 - Terence Tao - 2026

To choose the best environment, think about your current tech stack and whether you want AI tools heavily integrated into your workflow. Each of these options serves a distinct type of user:

1. If you already use IntelliJ, PyCharm, or WebStorm

Consider: lean4ij on the JetBrains Marketplace

Why: If you live inside the JetBrains ecosystem, you don't need to switch apps. The lean4ij plugin integrates directly into your workspace. It handles Unicode math character abbreviations seamlessly (e.g., typing \b1 triggers a 1) and lets you toggle the all-important mathematical Infoview by just clicking a dedicated universal quantifier symbol (∀) on your top toolbar.

2. If you want a lightweight, familiar experience with zero configuration

Consider: Lean4Code on GitHub

Why: Built by the Caltech/Washington University researchers behind LeanDojo, this is a standalone fork of VSCodium (the open-source, telemetry-free core of VS Code). Because it looks and feels exactly like VS Code, there is zero learning curve. However, it completely eliminates the painful manual installation process by bundling the Lean 4 extension, automated repository tracers, and LeanCopilot right out of the box.

3. If you want to experiment with AI-driven, automated mathematics

Consider: LeanIDE via LeanDojo

Why: If your goal is to let machine learning agents help you write formal math, LeanIDE is the most specialized environment. It is built specifically to bridge the gap between human programmers and LLMs. It features real-time, progress-guided search panels that can actually estimate exactly how many logical steps are remaining to finish a complex proof, prioritizing the most promising mathematical paths.

4. If you want a 100% native, ultra-clean environment

Consider: Lean Studio on MCP Market

Why: If you want a completely independent environment that isn't a plugin or a fork of an existing editor, Lean Studio provides a clean, native desktop application across Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is designed from the ground up for strict formal verification. It stands out because it embeds Tenet—an independent Lean 4 kernel—meaning your proofs are continuously re-checked locally for total correctness separate from the editor state itself.

Goal / Priority	Best Choice
“I hate configuration and just want it to work instantly”	Lean4Code
“I already use JetBrains for everything else”	lean4ij Plugin
“I want cutting-edge AI features and proof-search”	LeanIDE
“I want a completely native, standalone app”	Lean Studio

Which of those priorities resonates most with your workflow? If you're working on a specific mathematical topic or a software verification project, let me know and I can pinpoint the best one!

Despre prietenie - Poem
